Exploration, Excitement, Experiences. They're what the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is all about. And no, you don't have to be “advanced” to take it – it's designed so you can go straight into it after the PADI Open Water Diver course.

The Advanced Open Water Diver course helps you increase your confidence and build your scuba skills so you can become more comfortable in the water. This is a great way to get more dives under your belt while continuing to learn under the supervision of your PADI Instructor. This course builds on what you've learned and develops new capabilities by introducing you to new activities and new ways to have fun scuba diving.

  • You'll hone your skills by completing five adventure dives that introduce you to:
    • Underwater navigation
    • Deeper water diving (typically anywhere from 18-30 metres/ 60-100 feet)
    • An introduction to three more Adventure Dives, which will be based on the area you will be diving (Like Wreck diving, Night diving, Drift Diving, Photography, Boat diving, and so much more!)

Prerequisites

To take this course, you must be:

  • A PADI Open Water Diver (or qualifying certification from another training organization)
  • 15 years old (12 for Junior Advanced Open Water Diver)

What You Learn

The knowledge and skills you get in the Advanced Open Water Diver course vary with your interest and the adventures you have, but include:

  • Practical aspects of deep diving
  • Physiological effects of deeper scuba diving.
  • More ways to use your underwater compass
  • How to navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks and time
  • How to better use your dive computer and electronic Recreational Dive PlannerTM (eRDPTM)
  • And much, much more, depending on the Adventure Dives you do.

The Scuba Gear You Use

You use all the basic scuba gear including your underwater compass. Depending on which three adventure dives you pick, you may also be introduced to underwater photography equipment, a dive light, lift bags, a dive flag/float or other specialty gear.

The Learning Materials You Need

PADI's Adventures in Diving Manual provide information on more than 15 types of specialty diving. You'll use them as a guidebook to improve your diving skills and prepare for the new experiences and adventures.

Students read and complete the Knowledge reviews at the end of each chapter in the Advanced Open Water Diver Manual before class

Your Next Adventure

After you've tried a specialty in the Advanced Open Water Diver course, you'll probably want to take a Specialty Course and learn more. There are so many options to choose from, like Ice diving, navigation, Drift, Boat and Dry Suit.

For more information about this or other PADI courses have a chat with one of the DIVE SOURCE Team members.

How much does the Advanced course cost?: $250 ($125 per training day), plus the Advanced Open Water Diver Manual, charter fees, and rental gear. (Students receive 50% off rental gear while on the course.)

What do I need for Gear?: Mask, snorkel, strap style fins & wetsuit boots, cold water wetsuit, hood, gloves, BCD, 28-32 lbs of weight, weight belt (if not integrated), cold water regulator with compass, dive computer, 2-3 scuba tanks (depending on the number of dives that day). Optional but recommended - Underwater Flashlight

How do I reach my instructor?: After you have registered, the instructor's contact information will be available on your invoice and your contact information will also be forwarded to the instructor who will be in touch.

What do I do with the Advanced Open Water Dive Manual?: The manual is an important part of the class and contains valuable knowledge. Please read and complete the questions in:  “Thinking like a Diver” as well as each of the following sections before arriving for the dives you are doing: Peak Performance Buoyancy, Search & Recovery, Drift, Deep, Wreck and Underwater Navigation. (Failure to have this done = Not ready to dive that day)

Is there a classroom session?: No. Before each dive, the instructor will take up the Knowledge Reviews with you and you must have these completed and with you to be able to participate in the dive.

Can I use Dive Zone discount coupons on this course?: Dive Zone members may use their discounts as specified on their membership cards.

What happens if I fail to complete a training dive or have to reschedule?: If a student cancels with less than 7 days notice, is absent or late, shows up unprepared or not ready to dive or does not successfully complete a dive for some reason, they do not fail the program. They will need to do a makeup dive with one of the available instructors at a later date, at a rate of $30 per makeup dive, plus rental gear and any charter fees if applicable.

What if Dive Source has to cancel a training dive? If a training dive is cancelled for some reason (like weather) and it cannot be rescheduled. You have the option of receiving a store credit or refund for that training dive as well as rental fees (from Dive Source only) and charter fee if applicable for that day, but nothing more.
